Juneau Shotokan will be offering classes at the Yoga Path which is located at 5326 Shaune Drive, near Costco and the AK Brewery. Look for a green building towards the Costco end of Shaune Drive on the channel side of the road. We can fit 3-4 cars in front - right hand side of the building and several others can park (parallel) close to the fence that runs along the right side of the building. If you are interested in joining our dojo, please send us an email (juneaushotokanak@gmail.com) so we can set up a start time for you.
At Juneau Shotokan Karate, we believe in teaching traditional karate in a safe and friendly environment. Our experienced instructors have been training for years and are dedicated to helping our students achieve their full potential. We are a small non-profit group that has been teaching in Juneau for over 40 years.
We teach a traditional martial art from Okinawa Japan, that has been taught for centuries. Each class incorporates warm ups, basics, forms and either self defense or sparring. We are associated with the International Shotokan Karate Federation and the Alaska Region ISKF, which opens our doors to internationally recognized ranking, classes, tournaments, guest instructors and camps.
Our instructors are passionate about karate and dedicated to helping our students succeed. They have years of experience and are committed to providing high-quality instruction in a safe and supportive environment. We encourage families to join together. Our small classes guarantee quality instruction and a lot of one to one instruction.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced martial artist, our general classes are open to all levels and ages 7 and above, so families can learn together. Advanced students are offered additional time to work on advanced techniques and kata.
Since we are a non-profit group and our instructors donate their teaching time, we are able to pass on huge savings to our students. To cover rent, utilities and supplies, our monthly fees are only $80 per person per month regardless of rank. There is no monthly contract, monthly payments are expected by cash, credit or check at the beginning of each month.
We are located at the Yoga Path - 5326 Shaune Drive near Costco. Our new location includes a large, open training area, comfortable entry area, bathrooms and parking. To join either show up at the dojo at 5:45pm on either a Tuesday or Thursday evening or send us an email at juneaushotokanak@gmail.com. New students are welcome to join at any time.

Shotokan karate is a traditional style of Japanese karate that was founded by Master Gichin Funakoshi (pictured on the right). Karate is a martial art that focuses on self-defense by teaching blocking, striking, punching, kicking, throwing, and joint locks using the weapons of the body. The ultimate aim of practicing Shotokan karate is not to win or lose a fight, but to seek the perfection of one's character through consistent training.
The Juneau Shotokan Karate Club is a non-profit group under the direction of Sensei Doug Murray. We meet three times a week to train in basic moves, kata, kumite and self defense. Juneau Shotokan Karate adheres to the same high standards and principles set forth by Master Gichin Funakoshi in the dojo kun, which is still repeated at the end of every class, and the niju kun, which explains in more detail the guiding principles of Master Funakoshi's philosophy: Character, Sincerity, Effort, Etiquette, and Self-Control.
Juneau Shotokan Karate is affiliated with the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF). ISKF is a world-wide organization composed of over 70 member countries that was founded in 1977. Our local instructors are all members of ISKF who volunteer their time to teach the students. We are also part of the Alaska Region Shotokan group which allows us access to Regional Competitions, Karate Camps and extended testing and training opportunities.
