Due to the recent heavy snowfall in Juneau, the roof of our beloved dojo collapsed, resulting in a complete loss of the dojo. The building owners insurance will cover the costs of rebuilding the exterior shell, but our club will be financially responsible for recreating the interior. We have started a "gofundme" account to start raising funds that will go towards building up the interior. This will include new office and dressing room walls, bleachers, flooring, paint, doors, reinstalling the heating system (we are hoping the heater is still in working order, mirrors, etc. This has been a devasting loss to a dojo that has been a part of the Juneau community for over 40 years and which has played a large part in the lives of it's students. The rebuilding process may take over a year, so in the meantime we are searching for a temporary home. We all desperately want to keep training, teaching and offering self defense classes. We are a nonprofit 501 C3, so any donation that you make is tax deductible. Please help us save our dojo by making a donation. Thank you!!

Shotokan karate is a traditional style of Japanese karate that was founded by Master Gichin Funakoshi (pictured on the right). Karate is a martial art that focuses on self-defense by teaching blocking, striking, punching, kicking, throwing, and joint locks using the weapons of the body. The ultimate aim of practicing Shotokan karate is not to win or lose a fight, but to seek the perfection of one's character through consistent training.
The Juneau Shotokan Karate Club is a non-profit group under the direction of Sensei Doug Murray. We meet three times a week to train in basic moves, kata, kumite and self defense. Juneau Shotokan Karate adheres to the same high standards and principles set forth by Master Gichin Funakoshi in the dojo kun, which is still repeated at the end of every class, and the niju kun, which explains in more detail the guiding principles of Master Funakoshi's philosophy: Character, Sincerity, Effort, Etiquette, and Self-Control.
Juneau Shotokan Karate is affiliated with the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF). ISKF is a world-wide organization composed of over 70 member countries that was founded in 1977. Our local instructors are all members of ISKF who volunteer their time to teach the students. We are also part of the Alaska Region Shotokan group which allows us access to Regional Competitions, Karate Camps and extended testing and training opportunities.
